Wireless Mouse on the Fritz

Almost every night lately my wireless mouse goes nuts. The optical light or whatever you call it starts blinking non-stop, which makes the cursor jump across the screen whenever I try to do something. It’s as if it’s getting a constant signal from something else in the area. Anyone have any ideas?

Check for a small hair in and around the laser thingy on the bottom side. I’ve had similar experiences and often find a small piece of something jammed in there!

I’ve wanted one of those new Microsoft scroll mice, so when I received my Amazon associates payout yesterday I ordered up a new mouse.

    Problem solved! :-)

It’s the batteries! :D I have the Microsoft Wireless Natural Keyboard and Optical scroll mouse. I bought 4 rechargable batteries and recharger about a year ago and haven’t had any problems since. Every 2-4 weeks, just pop those babies in the charger for 30 mins and your set!

But this is now no use since you bought a new mouse … oh well.

It does sound like interference… well you are getting a new one so that might change the problem, some of them have a reset feature in the receiver or the mouse or both to switch channels… I would give that a try.

Come on folks, I do computer support. Give me a little credit. ;-) I had already attempted all of the normal troubleshooting things.

    Replace the batteries

    • Try another USB port
    • Push the channel/reset buttons on both the mouse and the wireless receiver
    • Reboot the computer
    • Clean the bottom of the mouse (although there may be a small hair somewhere there)

Weird thing is that it didn’t happen all of the time.

Hi, I’ve had this site for a few years now and I have to say, I was glad to see this because tonight was the first time I have had any problems with mine. I thought the keyboard was dying and never gave it a thought about the batteries and that’s what was wrong with it! I have never changed the batteries in all the years I have had this. As for the mouse, I have never used the one that came with the keyboard. If you want a great mouse, buy a Logitech MX700 cordless optical mouse. It is a great mouse and I have never had a problem with it and I’ve had it for a few years now.. at least 5-6. Good luck!!

How do you know if you were successful at changing the channel? I have 2 systems located close to each other and are using the same signal for both the wireless mouse and the wireless keyboard – I’ve done the button pusing trick and other than just seeing if it’s still messing everything up Is there another way to tell?

I have recently purchased a Micrsowft wireless mouse. I also have flat mouse (Cirque). When I installed the wireless, both of them worked fine. But when I restart the computer, something is interfering and is stoping the computer to boot. I rmoved the Crique and just left the Microsowft. But still computer is unable to finish the Boot. However, when I disconnect the Microsowft mouse and boot it, boots fine. After the boot is complete, I reconnect the Microsowt and it works fine! I am wondering what is causing this interference? any help to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

[...] I just figured out the mouse problem I had awhile back. It’s my mousepad. Right now if I try to use the mouse on the mousepad, it will barely move, but if I place the mouse on another surface it doesn’t have a problem. Doesn’t make much sense because most of the time it works fine (like right now). My mousepad is actually more like a piece of plastic. Maybe the coating is wearing off and causing a problem. Maybe I’ll order a new mousepad. [...]
