Royal Hold'em Notes

I’m messing around on UB with their new game Royal Hold’em just to have some fun. What’s Royal Hold’em?
Royal Hold’em is just like Texas Hold’em but with a twist. Only the best 20 cards from the deck are used (tens, jacks, queens, kings, and aces).
I even calculated the Royal Hold’em Odds earlier.
I’m no expert by [...]

Royal Hold'em Odds

Royal Hold’em is just like Texas Hold’em but with a twist. Only the best 20 cards from the deck are used (tens, jacks, queens, kings, and aces). While messing around with the game for fun I decided to calculate the odds of hitting your outs. Use them to crush your opponents.

2 New Books

A couple of new books came in from Amazon today…

High-Low-Split Poker, Seven-Card Stud and Omaha Eight-or-better for Advan (Advance Player)
Harrington on Hold\’em Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments: Endgame, 2

I’ve been enjoying tournaments lately so HOH2 was a no brainer buy, especially after I liked Volume I so much. Hold’em gets boring at times so [...]

Poker Podcasts

On my rides to and from work each day I’ve been listening to poker podcasts. Listening to poker discussions keep my mind off the traffic. In the mornings the poker talk gets my mind thinking and after work it helps to relax me after a long day.
My favorite poker podcast without a doubt is Card [...]

In Focus

I just finished browsing through some of my Poker Tracker stats for cash games and tournaments. It was an eye opener to say the least. What I had previously thought were my strengths are actually my weaknesses and vice versa. Once I can go through the data a bit more I’m going to write up [...]

The Ultimate Secret

Bill’s post titled The Ultimate Secret to Winning Poker is a great read for any poker player. New or old. I’m not great at poker, but I don’t suck either (or so I like to think). His post hit home on some great points. I’ve read the strategy books and understand the concepts. When I’m [...]

Review: Harrington on Hold'em – Volume I

I finally finished reading the best poker book available on tournament play. Dan Harrington has done the poker world a great service by writing Harrington on Hold’em. I would have finished the book much sooner, but it was my bathroom reader, so I was only reading 10-15 pages a day.
Harrington breaks down the game of [...]

Quoting Howard

While watching Howard Lederer play Razz on Full Tilt he said this…
NL is about making good laydowns
limit is about making good calls

Review: Winning Low-Limit Hold'em

Lee Jones did a good job writing Winning Low Limit Hold’em. The book is a solid 193 pages of information for low limit Texas Hold’em players. If I hadn’t read SSH and ITH, I would have really been impressed, but WLLH was pretty much the same information, but just a shorter format.
Jones breaks the book [...]

A Fresh Start

I hadn’t played poker since the 28th and my sister is coming to visit for a few days so I figured tonight was my best chance to play some poker. I’m glad I played. After a few hours of play at the Party Poker .50/1 tables I got in 300 hands and lost 8.5 BB. [...]

Review: Killer Poker Online

I’ve read some columns by John Vorhaus online and enjoyed what I read. His book, Killer Poker Online: Crushing the Internet Game, is a completely different story. The book is a waste of time and money. I’m glad a friend bought the book for me or I would have been very disappointed in the read.
I [...]

River Bets

Riding the F-Train has an interesting post about betting the river. Great information, but like some of the commentors, I don’t agree that this is true for the low limits. If I didn’t value be the river most of the time, I’d be missing out on a lot of bets. Checking and hoping they bet [...]

Shorty Advice

John Vorhaus has a great little primer on how to play the shorhanded tables. I don’t completely agree with everything he recommends, but I’ve already been doing the majority of it and it really does work.

Review: Internet Texas Hold'em

A little over a month ago, Ammon from ITH offered me a free copy of Matthew Hilger’s book Internet Texas Hold’em: Winning Strategies from an Internet Pro in exchange for writing a review on my site. Since I always review the books I read and had wanted the book, I quickly took him up on [...]

Review: The Theory of Poker

The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky is probably the most comprehensive book ever written on poker strategy. Sklansky covers bluffing, slow playing, game theory, table selection, and every other topic you can think of. While the book was written several years ago, almost everything can still be applied to today’s styles of play.
I will [...]

Big Hands Win

Over my last 10,000 hands, the cards with the highest winning percentage are AdAs, KcKh, QcQs, AsKs, and AhKd. In that exact order too. It’s reassuring to know that the best hand wins the majority of the time, even online.

Back in the Saddle

After taking a few days off, I sat down Wednesday night and fired up Party Poker. I opened up two of the $2/4 bad beat jackpot tables and played for a few hours, losing over $100. I had now lost nearly $600 over the last 3 days I had played. Time for a reality check.
I [...]

Hold'Em Poker

At about $20, this book is no where near being worth the purchase. I’ve only read one other Sklansky book, so I’m not an expert on his writing, but Hold’Em Poker comes up short in value. I own Small Stakes Hold ‘em: Winning Big With Expert Play, which is a much better book. Everything that [...]

Mental Lapse

I’ve been playing the $10 Sit & Gos on Party Poker recently as a break from the ring games, so today I was looking around for some advice. I came across one of the greatest pieces of no-limit advice I’ve ever heard.
AK is good for an all-in bet, but not to call an all-in.

Play Your Own Game

Yesterday I was browsing around the 2+2 forums, reading all kinds of advice. From a few threads that I read, it looked like I wasn’t playing enough hands from early position. I’ve been following the preflop recommendations from SSH for playing on a tight table (3-5 people to the flop on average) and things have [...]
